Fenchgate Shopping Centre teams up with Ocean Sole turning pollution into art
Frenchgate Shopping Centre is excited to announce a new collaboration with Ocean Sole, a Kenyan-based non-profit that turns ocean pollution into beautiful art.
This initiative is part of Frenchgate’s 'Planet Pledge' campaign to raise awareness about plastic pollution and climate change.
Ocean Sole collects discarded flip-flops from beaches and waterways in Kenya and transforms them into colorful, hand-carved sculptures of sea creatures. These colourful art pieces are displayed outside the Argento store.
In 2021, Ocean Sole collected over 1 million pounds of ocean trash, creating a piece of art every 60 seconds.
This effort not only helps clean up the environment but also provides jobs for over 1,000 Kenyans.
By recycling flip-flops, Ocean Sole saves over 500 trees each year and recycles more than one tonne of styrofoam monthly.
The organization also invests 10-15% of its revenue in beach cleanups, education, and conservation programs.
They use our social enterprise to pay bonuses to employees, invest in a welfare programme that allows a zero return in funds to their employees to help facilitate payments for educating their children, buying land and other means.
On display, you can find the following animals
- Crabs
- Dolphins
- Octopuses
- Reef fish
- Shark
- Turtles
The pictures below show our art sculptures being made in Kenya before they were shipped over to Frenchgate.
